Eclectic found material is the inspiration and source for Julia Barbee, who has had a recycled clothing and accessories line in Portland, Oregon for 10 years. Wanting to pair her love for making, with a historical, philosophical, and theoretical background, she went back to school, and in spring of 2011, and earned her Master of Fine Arts from California State University, Long Beach. Since her degree work she has done performance pieces in New York, installation work in Tacoma, and showcased belly dancers performing as pedestals for her crystallized sculptures. In December 2011, she opened her first open studio/shop on the backside of the 811 E Burnside building. Her degree work was a process-based study using scent as the platform for sculptural performance, and it is this methodology that is shaping her collection of one-of-a-kind pieces.
